Our History

More than fifty years ago Childress County commissioners convinced residents to create a hospital district, pass a bond election and build a new hospital. By 1970 the 75 bed Childress General Hospital had been completed and was sitting on a hill at the western edge of town. The building was modern and equipped with the latest technology to provide medical care for the community of 9,000 residents.

That original hospital is now the centerpiece of Childress Regional Medical Center. From 1991 to 2019 there have been renovations, remodels, and additions--all carefully planned to adapt to changes in healthcare delivery--quite different from 1970. Today, CRMC is licensed as a 39 bed hospital.

A rural health clinic was constructed next door to the hospital in 2004. Fox Rural Health Clinic serves as the bridge from the past to the future by housing local providers in a modern clinic named after pioneer doctors in Childress County. Local providers are joined by specialists that see patients on a regular basis including a general surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, urologist, cardiologist, oncologist and ophthalmologist . Other buildings on hospital grounds include a dialysis center, paramedic ambulance service headquarters and classroom facilities.

As the primary healthcare provider for 30,000 residents in a 5 county area, hospital leaders have accepted the challenge to provide a diverse range of high quality services.
In December 2007 Childress County Hospital District retired the original bonded indebtedness and remains debt-free. The lone surviving member of the 1965 commissioner's court was the guest of honor at that celebration.

Rural communities all over the nation struggle to provide access to healthcare. It's never just one thing that causes one medical community to thrive while another falters. In Childress, past and current directors, physicians, administrators and the community have worked tirelessly to ensure quality care is available in Childress.

A solid foundation, leadership, vision and determination is a good combination, leading
everyone involved to believe that the best days are still ahead.
